About the Orchestra
Musical Director - George Morton
George Morton read Music at the University of Sheffield and having received his Bachelor's degree, he took up postgraduate studies with George Nicholson (composition/orchestration) and Kenneth Brown (trumpet). Since graduating, George has settled in the leafy city of Sheffield and continues to enjoy its proximity to the Peak District National Park and locally-brewed beer.
As a conductor, George is in demand across the North of England. He is founder and Artistic Director of Rep Orchestra, a professional ensemble based in Sheffield which devotes its concerts to exploring innovative and exciting projects. As well as being Musical Director of the Sheffield Philharmonic Orchestra, George also holds residencies with the Sheffield Youth Orchestra and Nottingham University Wind Orchestra and the Rotherham Symphony Orchestra. He has appeared as Guest Conductor with other leading ensembles including Hallam Sinfonia, Stamford Chamber Orchestra, Sounds of the Engine House and the Swan Ensemble.

The SPO is a friendly and welcoming orchestra. We've got some really exciting performances planned and we currently have vacancies for Viola, Cello and Double Bass players of grade 6+ standard and a percussionist (tuned percussion if possible).
